My Number One

The past couple of weeks have been filled with tears. I received a message from my friend (a few years my junior) and shared with me her heartaches. She and her boyfriend for 5 years had just broken up. She was totally devastated.

And just a couple of days ago, I was again in tears when another friend shared about her break up with her long time boyfriend. They’ve been together for 8 years! Can you imagine that? Even her mom and my mom were crying with us as she shared to us what happened.

Why did God allow that to happen?
They were happy. They were in love.

You know looking at their situation, I only notice one thing. They gave all their love, attention and time to their boyfriends and neglected their relationship with God. Our God is a jealous God. He is. And anything that takes His place? He can just take it away.

That can also happen in any marriage. You can make your husband your idol, your own god. And that should not be the case. You are not supposed to make anyone or anything be the number one in your heart.

“You shall have no other gods before me.” -Exodus 20:3

I love my husband so much but not as much as I love Jesus. I know my husband loves me so much but not as much as he loves the Lord.

Is anything or anyone occupying God’s place in your heart?

… not to mention the fact that life sometimes gets too busy, and so we let all kinds of things take up our time. Marriage / dating relationships / friendships take SO much work! My husband and I are really in love, but we definitely have to make a conscious effort to make sure that we’re spending quality time together and really communicating. Because after a busy day of work, that’s not always the first thing you want to do. But it’s SO worth it! :)
