Dream vs Goal

I had a great afternoon yesterday at Toastmasters. As always! I mentioned to you before about Toastmasters if you remember. I really love this community because it has not just helped me improve my communication skills but my leadership as well.

This is Trisha, my friend who invited me to the Toastmasters Demo Meeting.

When I got there, she realized she forgot to tell me that I was going to deliver a speech. My jaw dropped!!! Like… what? Me, speech? Now? Well, I had no choice. In TM, you have to be ready to take any roles. Any time!

So there, I asked for a few minutes so I could at least think about what to talk about and write an outline so I won’t look crazy talking non sense.

After about 10-15 minutes, I was done with my outline. I’ll tell you what… I was shaking. And my heart was pounding SO FAST. Haha…

Anyway, here’s how the speech went. I started it with the question, “What is the difference between a dream and a goal?” There was deathly silence. I went on to share what Napoleon Hill said, “Goals are dreams with a deadline.” I got their attention this time. =p

I shared with them all my dreams when I was a kid – to be a beauty queen, best selling author, TV host, etc.). But I realized along the way that those dreams will never be a reality if I don’t turn them into a goal. I ended my speech by challenging them to define what they aspire. “Do you have a dream or a goal?”

Although my speech was super impromptu, I felt like it wasn’t that bad. =p I did enjoy my time on stage. Haha..

Have you heard of Toastmasters? Ever thought of joining that?
If you evaluate your life now, what do you have? A goal or a dream?

That sounds like a fantastic speech…it is definitely very thought provoking!

I have heard of Toastmasters, but it was something that they did at my work 10 years ago…I didn’t know it was a club you could join outside of a business. Sounds like you had fun!

There are clubs that are exclusive for certain companies. The one I am affiliated with is a community club. It has been helping me develop self-confidence and many other aspect of my career life. I LOVE Toastmasters!

That’s great! Dream big, as they say. =) I know I have promised to share with you about Toastmasters when I get back to the club. Maybe in a few months, I’d be able to share with you more about it. I’ll get in touch with you!!

I’m pretty sure you have one in your area. When I was in Singapore, I also looked for a Toastmasters club. Unfortunately, the one I found was a Mandarin speaking club. And I needed an English one. Eventually, I became very busy and didn’t have time to look for another club. You can go to the Toastmasters website and look for a club near you. I bet this will super help you!

oh my goodness. I would be freaking out if I had to do an impromptu speech! I can handle public speaking, but I must have alot of preparation time! Kudos to you being able to do it! I’m so chicken!

I love that quote “Goals are dreams with a deadline!” So true!!

Thanks.. It takes a lot of practice! Even though I had been with Toastmasters for more than half a decade, I still shake when I am about to deliver my speech! Haha

Good for you! I think you made a few really good points and I’m impressed that you put it together in 10 minutes!

I once thought about joining toastmasters as I think it would be really great to improve my “thinking on my feet” skills, but I haven’t moved past that stage. haha. Maybe in the fall?

I have heard of toastmasters! I find the idea of impromtu speaking super intimidating though! Sounds like you did a great job :) I have a mixture of dreams and goals right now, and I’m working on sorting them out and deciding which dreams I really want to turn into goals :)
